Adobe Systems is today expected to release code for an environment to unify design and development, plus code and a major re-branding for its next Flash and AIR RIA tool.

The company will that announce Flash Catalyst, previously codenamed Thermo, is available as a public beta. Accompanying Flash Catalyst is beta code for Flex Builder 4.0, the next version of Adobe's Eclipse-based IDE that's yielded to the marketing iron and emerged as Flash Builder.

Adobe said the name Flash Builder was picked to eliminate confusion. People thought there was a difference between Flex and Flash, when Flex applications are compiled to Adobe's SWF file and then played on the company's Flash Player. Adobe also hopes to draw a distinction between the paid version of Flex and the open-source framework that's available for free.

Flash Platform evangelist Mihai Corlan on an earlier Adobe blog said: "When I ask people at conferences 'Who's a Flex developer?' many people are unsure how to answer. Why? Because some of you are using the Flex framework, to create Flex or AIR applications, and not our IDE (Flex Builder), some of you are using Flex Builder, but without using the Flex framework (you use ActionScript 3 to create Flash applications). Thus the uncertainty."

Adobe's now adopting a suite-based naming approach around the ubiquitous Flash Player, which has instant name recognition. Flash Builder takes its place in the suite alongside the new Flash Catalyst and existing Flash Professional tools on the design side.

Capitalizing on that brand will be important as Adobe will compete for hearts and minds against a revamped Silverlight from Microsoft later this year.

The rebranding also comes in the week when Sun Microsystems will bang the drum for its own interface and media architecture - JavaFX. Sun will use JavaOne in San Francisco, California to try and persuade developers that JavaFX is the best way to build interfaces and media content on PCs, mobile phones, and TVs and that it has a viable future. Meanwhile, Adobe has been working with Sun to use JavaFX with its own design tools.

But what is brand without technology in this environment?

Flash Builder 4.0 will introduce the first fruits of an Adobe alliance with PHP specialist Zend Technologies from last year. Flash Builder 4.0 features a Zend framework to simplify the connection using drag and drop to data in back-end systems build using PHP.

There are also up-dated drag-and-drop connections to Java and Adobe's install based of ColdFusion, but not to back-end systems running Microsoft's .NET. Adobe said it would add new connectors over time, but made no specific commitment to .NET.

The builder will also support Flash Catalyst. This code will, according to Adobe, let you roundtrip an element, such as a graphic, that you code into, say, a button or slider between version four of Adobe's Creative Suite of tools and Flash Builder. You will be able to roundtrip and make changes, without losing work and have to return to the start and re-code. Flash Catalyst will do this using the company's new interchange format, called FXG.

Flash Builder 4.0 is due this year, but Adobe would not give a date for Flash Catalyst.

Zend and Adobe are planning to release Zend Framework version 1.7 with Zend_AMF support at Adobe MAX. The two companies announced in September their joint initiative to make it easier to develop rich Internet applications based on PHP and the free, open source Flex framework. As part of this collaboration Adobe will help to integrate Action Message Format (AMF) support into Zend Framework, which enables high bandwidth data integration between server-side PHP and client-side Flex data and logic components.

Zend will be exhibiting at the Adobe MAX show at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from November 16th-19th. Key focus areas of Adobe MAX are architecture, design, development, and delivery of RIAs. Be sure to visit the Zend and Adobe booths at Adobe MAX to find out more about our partnership and Adobe's AMF contribution to Zend Framework. Zend is located in booth #511.

RIA developers across the country have had the opportunity to see how powerful these new capabilities can be, in a user group tour and webinar series that was kicked-off earlier last month. To register for one of the November events please check our website event page for the schedule of events and locations.

The recorded version of last month's webinar has also been posted for review.

ZEND in the NEWS

Zend continues to make headlines. In addition to many blog posts and several stories about the Adobe partnership and Zend_AMF which appeared during and after ZendCon, this past month has seen continued speculation on Microsoft & PHP, an excellent article on the Zend 5250 Bridge in IBM Systems Magazine e-newsletter, a follow-up on the new RIA support for Zend Framework in InformationWeek (addressing Dojo Toolkit support for Ajax and the Flex announcement), and with Google and others now throwing their full weight behind the OpenID standard, Developer.com has published an article on Authenticating Users with OpenID and Zend Framework.

Why Open Source?

Posted by: sanjay900

sanjay900
With open source software, the code is protected by a special license that ensures everyone has access to that code. That means no one company can fully own it. Freedom means choice. Choice means power.

That's why we believe open source is inevitable. It returns control to the customer. You can see the code, change it, learn from it. Bugs are more quickly found and fixed. And when customers don't like how one vendor is serving them, they can choose another without overhauling their infrastructure. No more technology lock-in. No more monopolies.

And we believe open source simply creates better software. It multiplies one company's development capacity many times over. Everyone collaborates, the best software wins. Not just within one company, but among an Internet-connected, worldwide community. It's no coincidence that the rise of open source closely followed the rise of the Internet. The perfect breeding ground for collaboration, the Internet moves ideas and code around the world in an instant.

As a result, the open source model often builds higher quality, more secure, more easily integrated software. And it does it at a vastly accelerated pace and often at a lower cost.

The open source model is built on the premise that companies like Red Hat must consistently serve customers through extraordinary value, performance, and ease of integration and management. Or they can choose another vendor.

In the proprietary model, development occurs within one company. Programmers write code, hide it behind binaries, charge customers to use the software--then charge them more to fix it when it breaks. No one ever has to know how bad the software really is.

The problem worsens when you become tied to a company's architecture, protocols, and file formats. Bruce Perens calls this the addiction model of software procurement. Any model that puts customers at such a fundamental disadvantage is conceptually broken.

Open source is not nameless, faceless, and it's not charity. Nor is it solely a community effort. What you see today is a technology revolution driven ever forward by market demand.

The concept behind open source is not new. For centuries, universities and research communities have shared their work. Monks copied books by hand. Scientists publish new discoveries in journals. Mathematical formulas are distributed, improved, redistributed.

Imagine if all of this past knowledge was kept hidden or its use was restricted to only those who are willing to pay for it. Yet this is the mentality behind the proprietary software model. In the same way shared knowledge propels the whole of society forward, open technology development can drive innovation for an entire industry.

Joomla 1.0 is better than Joomla 1.5. There are still a lot of extensions that are only available in Joomla1.0 and not in Joomla1.5. The extensions that are available in Joomla1.5 contains many bugs.
