White Paper: A Guide for Migrating From Microsoft Access to MySQL

Many MySQL customers are migrating from Microsoft Access because they have reached the conclusion that the combination of enhanced scalability (both in terms of concurrent userload and overall data volume), cost-savings, platform freedom, and feature set of MySQL make for a compelling business case to offload some or all their Access applications to the MySQL database server.

White Paper: Best Practice Guide: Developing Subscriber Databases with MySQL Cluster

In this new paper we describe how MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition can be used to build a scalable, highly available, geographically replicated Subscriber Database. We show how user-defined partitioning and distribution keys help a subscriber database to scale its performance linearly with cluster size, while maintaining the benefits of a relational database, accessed via an SQL API.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Silent Install Instructions Lee Stigle

This entry provides instructions for "silently" installing MySQL on a Microsoft Windows server. I use the term "silent install" to describe the method of passing parameters to the Microsoft Installation Package (MSI) to bypass installation screens. This allows you to deploy MySQL with your application and to install MySQL without end-user intervention. The developer can define the install location, the appropriate storage engines, the root password and the server configuration.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Long running transactions Mark Callaghan

I was debugging a server that had too many concurrent queries. From SHOW INNODB STATUS output, there were many long running transactions with uncommitted work and there were many more transactions blocked on InnoDB locks. This is not a good state for a busy OLTP server and I am trying to figure out if the problem is the application or InnoDB.

PlanetMySQL Blog: PHP/C: Does MYSQL[I]_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT work?
Ulf Wendel

C and PHP MySQL clients can set a connection timeout before a connection is established to MySQL. The MySQL C API manual states about MYSQL_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT, which is equal to PHPs
MYSQLI_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT:

MYSQL_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT

Connect timeout in seconds.

From: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/mysql-options.html

That is half of the story. The actual behaviour depends on the library you use, the operating system and the transport protocol (TCP/IP, Unix domain sockets, Windows named pipes, Shared Memory).

PlanetMySQL Blog: Agents, Hosts and Instances, Oh My! Jonathon Coombes

The MySQL Enterprise Monitor (MEM) is designed to collect data from installations of MySQL and report back to the service manager so that information can be correlated and displayed in an easy to read form on the dashboard. What does become confusing sometimes for people is that the item displayed on the dashboard gives a hostname, but you have multiple databases running on that host?! How does MEM distinguish between all these installs of MySQL versus the hosts they are running on and how the data is collected for each one?

PlanetMySQL Blog: Data type confusion: what is an int(11)?
Sarah Sproehnle

Over and over I see customers that don't understand what int(11) really means. Their confusion is understandable. Many know what defining a char(10) means (a fixed-sized character string that allows up to 10 characters).
However, ints are different.

PlanetMySQL Blog InnoDB Plugin (With some Windows focus) - Part 1 Anders Karlsson

So InnoDB is now, from 5.1.38, distributed with MySQL. It is still not enabled by default though. What this means is that there are 2 InnoDB implementations that comes with your MySQL installation. The old-school standard one, which is compiled in with the MySQL binary and is enabled by default, and one plugin.

PlanetMySQL Blog: MySQL and hardware information Sheeri Cabral

People often ask "what's the best hardware to run a database on?" And the answer, of course, is "it depends". With MySQL, though, you can get good performance out of almost any hardware.

If you need *great* performance, and you have active databases with a large data set, here are some statistics on real life databases - feel free to add your own.

PlanetMySQL Blog: PHP: 150 performance tuning screws for mysqlnd Ulf Wendel

Yes, 150 means we added some 30 performance statistics to the MySQL native driver for PHP (mysqlnd) since monday. The new statistics are explained in three words: counting COM_* commands. COM_* commands refers to the command packets of the MySQL client server protocol. For example, COM_QUERY is used to execute nonprepared SQL statements.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Make MySQL refuse connections until data nodes are started Geert JM Vanderkelen

MySQL Cluster 6.3.28 and 7.0.9 introduce the MySQL server option --ndb-wait-setup. This makes sure that clients can not connect the SQL Node when no Data Nodes are available within, by default, 15 seconds. When the timeout is reached, and no Data Nodes are available, the NDB storage engine will be marked as unavailable.

PlanetMySQL Blog: How MySQL Cluster Executes Queries Sarah Sproehnle

This post describes how MySQL Cluster executes queries. First of all, Cluster is a storage engine. It doesn't actually execute queries because it doesn't speak SQL. That is why you use a MySQL server, which parses your queries and sends low-level storage engine API calls to the Cluster data nodes. The data nodes know how to retrieve or store data. Or you can talk to the data nodes directly using the NDB API(s).

Apple is not the dominant computing platform.

It's true that Apple is just as proprietary a company as Microsoft. Some might say more so. But there is a big difference between competing with proprietary products and holding a monopoly with them which you use to keep open source down.

There is a reason that history records a case called U.S. vs. Microsoft. Microsoft has both a monopoly and a proven record of using its power to keep open source from gaining a foothold.

Apple, meanwhile, has just a 10% share of the operating system market. Sure, if they had more they might be dangerous, just like if I looked like Antonio Banderas I might be a movie star.

Microsoft did not really change its tune after the court case wound down.

* Microsoft subsidizes the channel so every PC in the store runs Windows, even netbooks where that's more trouble than it's worth.
* Sharepoint is designed specifically to extend its monopoly.
* Remember the OOXML standards battle, where Microsoft corrupted the standards process itself to maintain control of the applications market?
* The Novell deal, in which Linux vendors admit that 2+2=5 so Microsoft won't assert non-existent patent claims against them, still gets me mad every time I think about it.

Now it's true that Apple supports Digital Rights Management (DRM), and limits what users can do. The Free Software Foundation is dead set against DRM. But this was the industry's price for even letting Apple offer a product like the iPod.

The music industry's reaction led to Apple offering to forego DRM and may be the biggest victory open source won in this decade.

Or take the iPhone. Sure it's designed to enforce AT&T's control of bits, and in so doing enforce Apple's control of what you do with the device. But it's the Apple-AT&T relationship that is objectionable. The handset market is increasingly competitive.

The whole idea that the Free Software Foundation should go against Apple rather than Microsoft, then, is a straw man. Apple may want the control over users and markets that Microsoft has enjoyed this decade, but it doesn't have that control, nor is it likely to achieve it.

The Nooku team is delighted to announce that the Nooku Framework has been publicly released — made available at Sourceforge.net The framework - which was announced last May - empowers Joomla! 1.5 to new levels and is designed to provide third-party developers with Joomla's missing MVC. Lead architect, Johan Janssens, said the framework will provide developers with "future-proof" tools to "enable exciting and efficient ways to make Joomla better through extendable developement." For the time being access is only available using Subversion (SVN). Installable packages will be made available once we hit our 0.7 milestone. There's a good reason for that: there's little documentation at the moment, and we don't want to get flooded by emails from people with support questions. The SVN serves as a simple filter. So where do you go if you have questions ? Simply fill out the form to request access. It only takes two minutes of your time. It's a win-win: We get to know a little about you, and you get access to our discussion mailing list, where all the good stuff happens. ... oh, and you get to use the most advanced framework ever built for Joomla. Nooku Framework is created by award-winning developers and founding members of Joomla who have been responsible for creative innovation in code for many years.

White Paper: Open Databases White Paper - MySQL Provides Scalability,
Reliability & Enterprise Support at a Lower Cost

Enterprises are looking for the best, most cost-effective way to manage the
ever-increasing amount of data, an ever-growing pool of users, and
unrelenting demands for high availability. As proprietary database systems
have grown increasingly complex with features that many companies don't
need, they have also become harder to manage and more expensive in terms of
upgrades and staffing, training, and support. The Sun MySQL database
delivers the scalability and features that companies need but with less
complexity and lower costs than proprietary systems.

PlanetMySQL Blog: OPTIMIZE TABLE on MySQL Cluster (revisited)
Johan Andersson

Before, OPTIMIZE TABLE hardly freed up any pages and to defragment you had
to do a rolling restart of the data nodes. Now, there is only a 2%
discrepancy between OPTIMIZE TABLE and doing a rolling restart. This is
great stuff. This fix will make into MySQL Cluster 6.3.26 and 7.0.7.

Andrew Morgan

MySQL replication is often positioned as a solution to provide extra
throughput for your database. What tends to be overlooked is how it can be
used to provide high availability (HA) - no matter how much redundancy you
have at a local level, your system remains at risk from a single
catastrophic failure - loss of power, earthquake, terrorist attack etc.

PART I: WHAT IS "OPENNESS" AND WHERE DOES LINUX FIT INTO AN OPEN MOBILE LANDSCAPE?

The term "openness" can be defined in a number of ways within the mobile industry.

* An operating system is said to be open if it exposes its APIs to third-party developers.
* If these third-party developers can develop services without undue reliance on device manufacturers and operators for certification, verification and signing, it can be said that the development model is open.
* Open distribution occurs when content providers and developers can directly market and deliver applications to the consumer without requiring approval from the network operator or device manufacturer.
* In a broad sense, "openness" also refers to the extent to which the platform, interfaces, and development language are standardized and easy to understand and use.

Perhaps most important is an open market in which third-party developers can have a free and viable opportunity to capitalize on their efforts.

Generally speaking, mobile communications were largely closed until recently. Operating systems and content were operator-specific, thereby creating "walled gardens" that restricted user experience and developer opportunity.

This business approach is not unnatural for an industry in maturation stage; however, in the mobile industry it resulted in dozens of proprietary operating systems (OS), rendering application development across different handsets and networks both tedious and costly, ultimately hindering innovation and market growth.

A poor browsing experience coupled with unexciting applications could not trigger consumers' interests and as a result, the mobile Internet was slow to take off.

The mobile industry has since realized that in order to provide demanding customers with more compelling and differentiated next-generation mobile experiences, coalescence is required around two or three global platforms built on underlying principles of openness and collaboration, rather than proprietary development behind closed doors.

Linux is undoubtedly well placed to be the foundation for one of these global platforms. Not only highly functional and scalable, Linux also has a long, successful history in embedded systems, setting the stage for "cross-platformization" between mobile and other categories such as desktop and consumer electronics.

One of Linux' core strengths is that it can support multiple application development platforms and graphical user interfaces, each providing a very different look and feel. This inherent flexibility allows OEMs and operators to target specific developer communities, in turn allowing those developers to micro-segment the user base so that they can provide more customized and personalised applications.

Additionally, Linux is not tied to the brand or agenda of any other major company, as is the case for Nokia's Symbian OS and Microsoft with its Windows Mobile OS, which creates unfettered business model flexibility that can fully support a highly customisable user experience.

Mobile Linux solutions share APIs with the desktop and enterprise solutions. As a result, previously developed third-party Linux applications can be ported to the mobile environment more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Shared APIs also provide economies of scale for the developer community, as developers can write applications for both the desktop and mobile environments with only a minimal duplication of effort.

With this commonality between mobile Linux and mobile desktop platforms, there is already a vast pool of developers working on the Linux platform. From an operator and manufacturer's perspective, this means there are enough developer resources to provide a rich, broad ecosystem of applications. For the Linux developer community, the mobile landscape is now open for business without the hindrance of a steep programming learning curve.

Last but not least, the use of Linux in the mobile environment is being supported throughout the handset value chain and in all global regions. This offers a large targetable user base for developers and makes development of Linux applications financially appealing.

In Part II of this look at how openness and Linux are unlocking innovation, I will review the keys for successful establishment of an open mobile ecosystem.

Orlando, FL - Aspire Technologies QuoteWerks integrates with SugarCRMAspire Technologies Inc., a provider of sales quoting software solutions for the global small and mid-markets, announced its newly developed QuoteWerks integration with SugarCRM (Commercial Open Source CRM) and a new partnership with the leading provider of open source CRM solutions for small, medium, and large enterprises worldwide. Under terms of the partnership, announced July 8, QuoteWerks will be offered through the SugarExchange marketplace.

How a tightly integrated CRM can help

The following advice for customer relationship management (CRM) integration is based on features of the new Aspire Technologies QuoteWerks integration for SugarCRM. Tightly integrated CRM can help manufacturing processes by:

• Searching the CRM database for a contact or account to use in the quote;
• Creating a note record for the contact, save it with the quote, and make it available for review and modification later;
• Creating or updating a sales opportunity when saving a quote;
• Converting the quote to an order when a sale is made and close the sales opportunity as a "closed as won" sale.
• Offering to schedule a follow up call when saving a quote or revision;
• Inserting data fields into the print layout as needed; and
• Pulling lookup list information from the CRM.

The QuoteWerks integration for SugarCRM is included in Build 47, which was commercially released July 8 by Aspire Technologies. Aspire Technologies explains more about QuoteWerks and SugarCRM integration.

"Sales quoting and CRM go hand in hand," said Keith Carrington, vice president of sales and marketing for Aspire Technologies. "Companies want to have a seamless, accurate, and efficient sales quoting process which makes use of vital customer and sales opportunity data that typically reside in disparate CRM, Accounting, and quoting systems. This integration makes it possible to achieve both quoting automation and a competitive advantage affordably and with minimal effort," Carrington says. QuoteWerks integrates with SugarCRM versions 5.1 and 5.2 including Community, Express, Professional, and Enterprise editions.

"The market for on-demand CRM applications such as SugarCRM is expected to grow by an estimated CAGR of 17.4% between now and 2013," said Carrington. SugarCRM currently has over 500,000 users in 195 countries, while QuoteWerks has 50,000 users in 101 countries. Given the seamless integration between the two applications, both companies anticipate strong demand for their products across multiple industries and markets.
